Getting window curtains is quite an expensive affair these days. That’s mainly because they require a large quantity of fabric of good quality, as you wouldn’t like it to get faded or worn out too early. Apart from the cost of the material you need to add charges for their making, including the lining and the tiebacks plus whatever other decorations, if you so desire. Yet, there are ways to have great looking curtains at affordable expense, enabling you to enhance the décor of the room where you like to include them. Here are some of those:

1. Frame the Window

When privacy is secondary for the room you intend having curtains for, and you like dressing the window, try using curtains with narrow panels that just cover the window without being sufficiently wide to cover it completely. So, you create the impression of curtains without using sheaths of fabric needed for full curtains. If privacy is required use of simple blinds above the window could meet the requirements using dress curtains. However, the curtain panel shouldn’t be so narrow that it becomes apparent that the curtains wouldn’t be drawn anytime.

2. Use Shades and Valences

An equally good option is to have an attractive valence above a plain Roman shade in a natural tone or even contrasting color. That way you get curtains with designer look, offering privacy without paying the price of full curtains.

3. Choose Cheaper Fabrics

Using large quantity of economical fabric gives a more luxurious look than using more expensive fabric of limited length that wouldn’t give enough feeling of fullness. On the whole it works out economical usually.

4. Rich Embellishments

Including infringing and beading can enhance the looks of curtains made from inexpensive fabrics to give them a designer look at an affordable expense. Likewise, you could use matching decorative tiebacks.

5. Use Ready-mades

In case your windows are of standard size you can surely buy ready to use curtains at very economical prices, which otherwise are quite expensive in case you have to get them made to the non-standard size of your windows. If you can shop around for ready-made curtains you will find these to be available in a very large variety of colors and designs and you are sure to get some to meet your requirements.

6. Look For Discounts and Sales
Quite often one finds stores offering ready to use or even custom made curtains on discounted prices. Not only that, some stores would offer to make these without charging any making charges in case of windows with non-standard sizes.

7. Buy Curtains Online

Ordering curtains online is also beneficial. You can choose from a much larger variety and compare the prices from within the comforts of your home. You may be aware that buying online is usually cheaper as the vendors have low overhead expenses, compared to a brick and mortar store.

8. Make them Yourself

If you have a swing machine at home and can spare time, you could stitch them at home. The advantage is two-fold. Apart from being an economical proposition, it enables you to buy a material of your choice at an affordable price. Sewing of curtains is not at all difficult, as most of the time you are required to sew straight lines. Nevertheless it remains time consuming, depending on the number and lengths of curtains. You may like to try sewing curtains for one of the smaller windows before venturing into the larger variety.

One of my favorite tricks for dressing up your windows without breaking the bank is to buy a nice set of wood blinds that will last and provide a good amount of privacy. Then I find some low cost curtains or fabric to frame them. They don’t need to cost a lot because I then have the freedom to change them to fit the season or whenever I want to move on to something new.
